Tires are the only items of a slot car, apart from the guide-blade, that is in contact with the track. While the guide-blade steers the car around the circuit and prevents it from de-slotting, tires are generally the essential components that put the power down (from the motor) and also allows the car to track obediently round any curve.

Excessive speeds will cause the car to slide round a bend and this doesn't help with good track times. A good pair of tires will allow you to turn at sufficiently high speeds without sliding excessively.
